What is the current situation for debt in UK?
By Mr Bankruptcy
29th January 2021
The Covid pandemic has had a serious impact on individuals and businesses, and many people are going to need help with unmanageable debt in the months and even years to come.
The true extent of the effects of lockdowns and a restricted economy is now being understood and the shocking facts are revealing a story we should all be concerned about:
- Adults in the UK owed £1,688.5 billion by the end of October 2020.
- More than 15million, or 23% of the UK population are now in poverty.
- Approximately 6 million people have fallen behind on at least one household bill during the pandemic, according to Citizens Advice.
- UK firms could hold £100 billion of unsustainable debt by the time repayments of coronavirus support loans first become due in March.
Looking forward
Despite these startling facts, it’s important not bury our heads in the sand about debt matters. Debt places an intolerable amount of pressure on those who have personal or business debts and this strain often leads to issues with physical and mental wellbeing.
If you have debt, it’s important not to become overwhelmed as this is when a sense of powerlessness to resolve a problem can cause inaction. No matter how difficult your situation may seem:
- Take time to understand the full extent of your debt problem,
- Review your budget to see where it’s possible to make savings and ensure you live within your means,
- Understand which are your priority debts so that you can identify which need to be addresses first,
- Talk to creditors to explain your situation and seek their advice and support,
- Talk to friends and family to help you manage the emotional impact of your debt,
- Seek debt management advice if you can’t find a way to start managing your debts quickly.
You may know someone who is struggling financially at the moment. Spotting the signs of unmanageable debt in others can help you understand when debt is becoming a real problem. Your support may be needed to help them find the courage to seek more advice and start tackling the situation.

Using personal experience to help mediate people out of debt
By Mr Bankruptcy
21st January 2021
Before founding James Rosa Associates in October 2010 Julian Donnelly’s journey to becoming a civil and commercial mediator has been a personal one, after he himself experienced personal bankruptcy following redundancy and a relationship breakdown.
It was this experience that led Julian to working with the professional firm which supported him through his insolvency and now motivates him to help others with his unique insights into commercial and personal debt.
Getting to the crux of a problem
Julian spent a lot of time negotiating settlements on behalf of his civil and commercial clients. As a debt counsellor and debt adjustor, he advises businesses and individuals on debt solution options. Taking the time to understand both sides of a situation ensures that the key issues are identified and discussed, which has been essential in Julian’s role as a mediator.
Convinced that mediation offers the potential to save time and money for all parties, he also sees mediation as instrumental in retaining a civil and constructive ongoing relationship between all parties.
Julian’s experience of supporting clients, and working with creditors during challenging times, means that he is very empathic to the positions of both sides, taking time to understand differing perspectives whilst maintaining his neutrality to ensure that he provides an effective mediation service.
Finding a solution without court involvement
Well-practised communication skills and an approachable style, as well as nine years at a major high street bank and in a range of corporate roles in different sectors, enable Julian to connect quickly with parties.
Knowing the time and expense that can accrue when parties aren’t able to resolve disputes without the intervention of the courts, Julian works hard to help parties find a resolution before reaching this stage.
A member of the Society of Mediators and a CMC Registered Mediator, Julian’s areas of expertise include insolvency, company and shareholder disputes, land and property claims, partnership disputes, cost disputes and matrimonial disputes.
Mediation offers and opportunity for parties to find a solution that addresses both sides priorities rather than relying on a prescribed court ruling, so hopefully reach a more agreeable outcome.
