Resolving debts is in the interest of all parties and it doesn’t always have to be done in court, with all the cost and heartache that can cause. For many of my clients, mediation is a positive step to addressing both the financial burden of their debt and the emotional one.
What is mediation?
Mediation provides the opportunity for both sides in dispute over a debt to reach an agreement without the need for court intervention. With the support of a neutral third party, mediation follows a specific process and timetable that allows parties to put forward their case and then work together to find an outcome that’s acceptable to both. The mediator won’t make the decision for those involved but helps them to focus on what’s important to them and to find a resolution. Once an outcome has been agreed, it’s binding on all parties.
How mediation helps to resolve debt
The principals and processes behind mediation are all directed towards helping all sides to find an outcome that’s agreeable to all. It creates a situation that is helpful in finding a resolution and clients often feel it helps resolve debt:
Is mediation for me?
I’ve talked in my blog before about using my personal experience to help mediate people out of debt and I believe that participation in this type of dispute resolution creates a constructive environment which encourages parties to work together to find an agreeable outcome.
